MATCH REPORT: Leckhampton Rovers Lions 2-2 Churchdown Panthers Whites (PENS 4-2)
Sunday 22nd January 2017
Our 2016-17 County Cup campaign succombed to the hardest of defeats, in a penalty shoot out.
The game had a flying start to it, with a Leckhampton free-kick on 3 minutes, resulting in a melee in the box and the ball being tapped in. But 2 minutes later Panthers were level. A Sonny McCarrick throw in, was headed on by Josh Collinson, to Jakub Kroliczak at the back post who finished well. It was a largely an end to end game after that, perhaps lacking a bit of quality on another heavy pitch. Some good quality from both keepers, with Elliot Whitfield making another fine save, to stop a shot finding the top corner. Leckhampton did get their noses back in front just before the break, with another free kick. This time a forward rose unmarked in the box to finish well with his head.
We played a bit better in the second half, creating more chances, and seeing one effort hit the bar and bounce down on the line. The opposition also hit the woodwork at the other end. Two minutes into time added on, and Alex Fulford burst through the Leckhampton defence, only to be clipped in the box. Ethan Dunbar stepped up and cooly converted the pen.
So we went into penalties, where all players struggled with a dodgy penalty spot. Ethan Dunbar and Jon Whiting found the net with their penalties, but having missed two and Leckhampton not making any mistakes, we lost 4-2 on pens.
A hard physical game, that was always going to be tough. We deserved the draw overall and the pens were just bad luck. For another commanding performance at the back, our player of the match was Jazton Juico.
