Panthers played good football against a year group up, and competed well. Unfortunately it is the case that good football was beaten by the long ball game, and the better team did not get what they deserved. We were guilty of giving away a couple of cheap goals, but could still have come away with a result.
Cleeve scored goals on 11 and 17 minutes, both as a result of misplaced balls out of defence, but on 21 minutes we were back in it. Kian Gardiner played a fantastic ball from the left side to put Ethan Dunbar through on goal. Ethan calmly lifted his effort over the keeper. But with a minute or 2 left on the clock in the first half, Jazton Juico felled the Cleeve striker in the box, and Cleeve converted the penalty.
Just 4 minutes into the second half, Cleeve scored again, from a counter attack after Panthers had started the 2nd half well. Mid way through the second half, Ehren Wintle played a slide rule pass for Ethan Dunbar to get on to and grab his second.
Another day we would have got a result from this game. A slightly disappointing way to finish the astro cup competition, but the team played some good stuff. Player of the match for excellent application of pressure on the Cleeve back line, is Ed Leech.
ASTRO TROPHY: Churchdown Panthers Whites 3-1 Gala Wilton
Sunday 14th January 2018
What a terrific first half performance, to set us up for a great win. Great energy, high effort and lots of passion on show.
We took the lead on 20 minutes. Ehren Wintle fed the ball forward for Ethan Dunbar, who turned and fired a left foot shot across the keeper. Then 7 minutes later we doubled the lead. Jon Whiting found Ethan Dunbar in the area, whose quick feet bamboozled the defenders. Ethan's shot was deflected off the head of a defender, only for Jaydon Dix to head home.
Gala got back in it early in the second half, a through ball putting the defender in 1 on 1 to score. But Panthers were too strong throughout, and wrapped the game up with 10 minutes left. Cam Thornton put Tom Whiteside away, who after checking back onto his right fott, beat the keeper from the edge of the area.
A spiritied performance, and some quality football. Our player of the match went to Ethan Dunbar, who was just everywhere today.
Today just has to be chalked off as one of those days!! We created enough chances to score a hat full of goals but couldn't put it away. We could have played until midnight and not actually scored. Even when we did score, it is the first time ever I have seen an own goal ruled out for offside!!??!!.
We didn't play at our best in the first half, but overall and for the second half performance we more than deserved something from this game. It just wasn't to be.
The only goal of the game, came mid way through the second half, when a boot out from Alex Fulford, was volleyed back into the box and perfectly for the stiker to be one on one to finish.
Tough luck for the boys today. Finishing next on the training schedule :). For being the architect of a lot that was good in midfield, our player of the match is Ehren Wintle.
