Churchdown Panthers U8s 6-1 Swindon Village Bowmen U8s
A warm, sunny Saturday morning as the Under 8s entertained Swindon Village Bowmen at home. The under 8s also welcomed back founder coach Lorne Plemel, on a break from tour of duty.
The first 15 minutes were fairly balanced, with little in the way of goalmouth opportunities. The best chances for the home side, came when Ethan Streatfield managed to break down the right wing on a few occasions. However, it was the away side that grabbed the only goal in the first period, when a scuffed shot somehow made its way though 2 or 3 defenders, under the keeper and trickled over the line.
It was all change for the 2nd 15 minutes, when a completely different Panthers side took to the field. The home team started to build momentum, and after 5 minutes Austin Plemel was put through on goal, putting it nicely wide of the keeper to level the scores 1-1. As the home side continued with the majority of possesion, Josh Bird hit a well placed shot to put Panthers in to the lead. Panthers could have added to this, when Alex Fulford was felled just outside the area. Stepping up, he curled the free kick over the wall, but it was well saved by the keeper.
The 3rd 15, saw the return of the team that played the 1st quarter. This was a very evenly balanced quarter, with Bowmen growing in confidence. The away side had the best chances of this period, managing to turn the ball over from 2 yards, and having a goal disallowed for the ball going out of play in the build up. Strong defending by the home side, and Jazton Juico in particular, ensured a goaless 3rd period.
All change again for the final 15 minutes, and it wasnt long before Josh Bird broke free of the defence and finished from a tight angle to get his 2nd of the game. As the away team started to tire, the fresher legs of the home side took the advantage. Most of this period being played in the Bowmen half, the home side hit the woodwork on more than one occasion. Mid way through the period, Alex Fulford intercepted a clearance from the goalkeepr, and was able to slot home into an empty net. A run from midfield by Ben Murphy, saw him avoid a couple of challenges and blast past the keeper for Panthers 5th. Late on, a defensive error from the Bowmen, saw the ball roll across the area, where both Ben Murphy and Shun-Ta Cheong were unmarked, the later just about getting to the ball first to smash it home, and complete a comfortable win for Churchdwon.
